Frequently asked questions

What does psychomotricity bring to our school?

Its main objective is to encourage the development of the child’s potential and to help him/her to express him/herself, his/her ability to create and communicate in an appropriate way. It encourages children to become more confident and self-assured and to explore their environment. We generate security and confidence so that children can explore and express themselves freely. It favours the formation of identity. Through their body in movement, their relationship with objects, space, with themselves and with others, children become aware of their possibilities and limitations. The child thus acquires a harmonious psychomotor development. It helps children to express their emotions and helps to release emotional tensions. It favours relationships and communication with others.

Does the school offer any other services?

PARENT’S SCHOOL: it is held every month and a half and deals with topics related to the developmental age of the school stage we are dealing with. These topics are chosen by the parents by vote.

PSYCHOPEDAGOGICAL CARE: we attend to parents who need it, always by appointment.

BOOK LENDING: the school has a library service for those parents who wish to read about subjects related to their children’s education.

EARLY CARE: When the children attend the centre for the first time, a personal assessment is made with each one of them where we observe their evolutionary development and maturity. If a child needs special or specific attention in any area of their evolutionary development, an action protocol is put in place for these cases. The centre, with the support of the Early Attention Programme (EAP), will work specifically and individually.

Can parents attend the school? Are there activities for them?

Our school is an open-door school, which means that parents can enter their children’s classrooms at the entrance and exit. During the morning, the main door is closed for security reasons and to avoid disruption during the work with the students. Parents stay at the school at different times:

  • During the adaptation period they can share time and space with their children.
  • In the Pre-school groups, parents are invited during the last term to take part in activities with their children and the classroom group. These activities are previously planned by the school’s educational team.
  • Family-School Days are organised every three months during the afternoon; the educational team designs and develops different activities where families can participate and share the school space with their children.
  • At Christmas and Carnival, workshops are organised for families with the aim of decorating the school and making children’s costumes respectively.

When is the centre closed?

The centre is always closed at Christmas (between 12 and 15 days) and Easter (10 days). We are also closed on public holidays in the Balearic Islands and Ibiza and we have 2 free public holidays during the school year.

What is the introduction period?

It is a process through which the child works out, from an emotional point of view, the loss and the gain that the separation from his family entails, until he voluntarily arrives at an internal acceptance of it. Separation invades the child with feelings of insecurity, abandonment, anguish, fear, isolation… encountering all these feelings leads them to get to know themselves, to discover their possibilities, their resources. It is important that, in their environment, adults with their listening, understanding and help give them the power to express their emotional world. Children express their situation differently depending on their age and stage of development. In the youngest children, there may be sleep disturbances, feeding, fever, etc. Older children may show behaviours such as clinging to a particular object, wanting to escape, lack of movement, vomiting, etc. Adaptations that are highly charged with anguish, with intense and frequent symptoms, will be a reason for analysis and guidance. The length of the adaptation period varies from child to child. A normal process may take 2 or 3 weeks and a process with added difficulties may take up to 3 months or so.

What is psychomotricity?

Psychomotricity is a bodily practice that discovers, through observation and listening, the capacity to give meaning to verbal and non-verbal expression, from which human beings communicate. Movement is our means of expression in the centre; through it children express their emotions and feelings. Through movement, children get to know their bodies and the world around them, develop their identity, acquire security and autonomy and learn multiple things.

What kind of activities do the children do?

Our methodology is based on the stimulation of all areas of development. Psychomotricity has a prominent place in our centre, an activity that is carried out two days a week. The rest of the days, activities are carried out within the methodology of environments. The proposals are related to the project to be worked on every three months. In our centre they experience, play and learn at the same time! They are fascinated by their own creations and discover the environment around them. There is a lot of stimulation of the five senses and they gain a lot of experience. Every day there will be stories and tales, and songs will be the order of the day; in the classrooms they are offered a variety of materials to choose from, to discover and to learn.

Why choose CEP Mafalda?

Since the creation of the school more than 40 years ago, we have not stopped growing and recycling constantly, from our internal movement, our concerns and our vocation and love for this profession we have been transforming ourselves and at the same time transforming our spaces and facilities, our being with the children who daily transmit to us that illusion and emotion so necessary in life.

Secondly, Mafalda is characterised by its methodology, three words carry weight in our daily work: OBSERVE, LISTEN AND ACCOMPANY. We speak and listen with the gaze that gives the children presence and recognition. We observe and accompany the child in his or her development and life process, listening to what he or she needs, what worries him or her, what motivates him or her.

Thirdly, we would say that in the school there is an atmosphere of trust and security, which is key to helping the child to evolve, grow and learn. This would not be possible without the role played by the teachers in our centre as attachment figures who adapt to each child, to their rhythms and their particularities. They are a great support for channelling the child’s feelings, but also for the family, whom they guide, always inform and support.
